Lot 39

Jodie Schell

The job

Jodie Schell runs Lot 39, a cafe and gift shop in Goomalling. She is a farmer's wife with four daughters who were not headed for the farm, and the town had nowhere to meet for a coffee or buy a gift. The shop gave the girls customer service and barista skills they could take with them. Her youngest is there now, on a gap year. The film is Jodie on why the shop exists, and what it gave her daughters, in a form the town can keep.

The work

She employs about nine Wheatbelt women, from about 18 to 50. She came to Dowerin because about 20,000 people come through the gates, from across WA and sometimes the Eastern States. She had worked in a bank and not much else, and she was making it up as she went. Her advice to anyone opening a small business is to go and do it. Nine women, a daughter on a gap year, and a bank job she left behind are the story. Her advice, to go and open the business, is the line the film ends on.
